(1) I write these things to you, my children, that you might not sin; but if someone should sin, we have an Advocate with the Father— a just Messiah, Jesus. (2) He is an atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for our sins only, but for the sins of the whole world. (3) In this we know that we have come to know Him: we should be keeping his commands. (4) The one who says, “I have known him,” and is not keeping His commands, this one is a liar and the truth is not in him. (5) For the one who might keep His word, the truth is in him and the love of God is made complete. In this we know that we are in Him. (6) The one who says to remain in Him ought to also conduct his life in the same manner as Jesus conducted His life. (7) Beloved, I am not writing a new commandment to you, but an old commandment we’ve had from the beginning; the old commandment is the word that you have heard. (8) Again, a new commandment I am writing to you, which is true among him and among you, that the darkness has passed away and the true light now shines. (9) The one who claims to be in the light while hating his brother remains in darkness. (10) The one who is loving his brother remains in the light, and is not a stumbling block to him. (11) But the one who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he goes, since the darkness makes his eyes blind. (12) I write to you, little children, since your sins have been forgiven on account of His name. (13) I write to you, Fathers, because you know Him who is from the beginning. (14) I wrote to you, children, so that you would know the Father. I wrote to you, fathers, so that you should know what was from the beginning. I wrote to you, young man, so that you are strong, and the word of God remains in you and you have overcome evil. (15) Do not love the world, nor the things of the world. If someone should love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. (16) For every ‘thing of the world’—the disordered desires of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the empty boastfulness of life—is not of the Father, but is of the world. (17) The world is passing away, along with its disordered longings, but the one who is persistently doing the Father’s will remains forever. (18) Children, it is the last hour, and just as you heard that an antichrist is coming, many antichrists have come; hence we know that it is the last hour. (19) They went out from among us but they were not [really] from us. For if they were from us, they would have remained with us, but [they left] so that it should be revealed that they are not all from among us. (20) You have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know. (21) I have not written you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it, and because every lie is not of the truth. (22) Who is the liar, but the one denying that Jesus is the Messiah? Thus is the Antichrist: the one denying the Father and the Son. (23) Everyone who is denying the Son does not have the Father; the one who professes the Son has the Father. (24) As for you, let that which you heard from the beginning remain in you. You will remain in the Father and the Son if what you heard from the beginning remains in you. (25) This is the Promise which He Himself promised to us: life that never ends. (26) I have written these things to you concerning those who are trying to lead you astray. (27) As for you, the anointing you received from Him remains in you and you have no need for someone to teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things (and it is true, not false), and just as it was taught you, remain in Him. (28) And now, children, remain in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink from Him in shame at His Coming. (29) If you know that He is just, you know that all who are practicing justice are begotten of Him.
