(1) A second word from Yahweh came to Jonah, saying (2) “Get up and go to the great city Nineveh and cry aloud to her the message I speak to you. (3) So Jonah got up and went to Nineveh in accordance with the word Yahweh said. Nineveh, being a vast city, is a three day journey across. (4) When He was a third of the way into the city, he cried out, “Yet forty days and Nineveh shall be be overturned.” (5) The people of Nineveh believed God and called a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them. (6) When word reached the King, he got up from his throne, removed his royal cloak and put upon himself sackcloth and he sat upon ashes. (7) He made a declaration in Nineveh and said, “By decree of the king and his noblemen, all the men and the beasts, the cattle and flocks shall not taste anything, neither shall they graze nor drink water, (8) and so let the men and beasts be clothed in sackcloth; let them cry out vehemently to God and let each man turn from his evil ways and from the violence in their hands. (9) Who knows? Perhaps God will show compassion and turn from His anger and we will not die.” (10) So God saw their deeds, because they turned from their evil ways and God held back from the judgment He said He would do to them and He did not do it.
